You already know what a narrow panel Fender Deluxe sounds like in the right hands. Neil Young knew. Larry Carlton knew. Billy F. knew. Grant Green knew. That particular amp, warm through the middle, dynamically alive, with a pine cabinet that resonates like a second instrument once you get the volume moving, has been the quiet engine behind some of the most musical electric guitar tones on record. Victoria's 20112 is our benchmark for what a serious recreation of that circuit looks like. The Double Deluxe takes that as its starting point and asks a reasonable question: what happens when you put two Deluxes in one box? The answer is four 6V6GTs, two American made 12" Eminence speakers, and a choice of rectifier that changes the character of the whole amp. Specify a 5Y3 and you're running at 30 watts - a little softer on the attack, a little more give in the feel, the kind of sag that makes single-note lines sing. Swap to a 5AR4 and you're at 40 watts, tighter and more immediate, with the headroom to stay clean further into the dial before things begin to move. Both are the right answer depending on what you're playing and where you're playing it. The fact that you get to choose is not a small thing. What the Double Deluxe does at volume is harder to describe than it is to experience. The two 12" speakers and the pine cabinet work together the way a well-made acoustic guitar works - the whole cab becomes part of the instrument, projecting in multiple directions rather than firing straight ahead like a flashlight. There's a dimensionality to it that close-miking alone doesn't capture, and a dynamic range that makes you want to play differently than you did five minutes ago. Victoria calls this one of their most inspiring amps in skilled hands. We'd extend that slightly: it's also one of the most fun (and instructive). Play it at conversation volume and it's pleasant. Push it into the room and it tells you things about your own playing you didn't know it was going to sa
