Quick Product Summary The JHS Pedals 424 Gain Stage takes one of recording history's most characterful accidental guitar sounds and puts it into a compact pedal. Inspired by plugging a guitar directly into a vintage 424 MKI multitrack recorder and deliberately overloading its input stages, it moves from elastic clean preamp tones through gritty overdrive to compressed, broken-up fuzz. Rather than approximating the idea with a conventional distortion circuit, JHS recreated the original 424 MKI gain architecture using the UPC4570 and NJM4565 op-amps associated with the original design. Gain 1, Gain 2 and Volume correspond to the recorder's Trim, Channel and Master stages, allowing all three to interact as part of the sound. The 424 Gain Stage is equally at home on a pedalboard or recording desk. Alongside its standard ¼-inch output, it provides a balanced XLR direct output and ground lift, allowing its lo-fi preamp colour to be recorded directly into a mixer or audio interface.
