The JHS Angry Charlie V3 is a high-gain distortion pedal designed to deliver the character and response of a powerful British-style amplifier in a compact stompbox. Its sound is centered around a tight low end, pronounced midrange and articulate top end, with enough gain for saturated rock tones while retaining definition and dynamic response. The V3 version expands the Angry Charlie design with a full three-band EQ. Separate Bass, Middle and Treble controls provide detailed control over the pedal’s frequency response, while Volume sets the output level and Drive determines the amount of distortion. This makes the pedal adaptable to different guitars, amplifiers and playing situations, from crunchy rhythm sounds to thick, sustaining lead tones. A key inspiration behind the Angry Charlie is the high-gain sound associated with the Marshall JCM800, giving the pedal its distinctly British voice. Rather than functioning as a simple overdrive, the Angry Charlie V3 can provide a substantial amount of distortion on its own and works particularly well when an amplifier-style drive sound with strong mids and plenty of punch is required.
