Seller's description

The Dr. Z PHD Head is here at Humbucker Music! The PHD is Dr. Z's love letter to those gloriously gritty single-ended class A tones - you know, the ones that made "Funk 49" legendary. Building on that classic vibe, this amp cranks up the headroom and tonal breathing room while keeping all that addictive harmonic swagger intact. Push the power tube and watch it bloom with character, not chaos. You get the raunchy, overdriven magic of a vintage Champ without the limitations - more clarity, more control, and enough sonic flexibility to explore every shade between whisper-quiet and wide-open. It's the best of both worlds: vintage soul with modern practicality. Dr. Z engineered the PHD by cherry-picking the best sonic DNA from amp history. Swapping in a beefy 6SL7 preamp tube brought muscular richness, while a Gold Lion KT66 power tube delivered the articulation and frequency spread that made Steve Cropper's Telecaster sing through a tweed Harvard. The upgrade to a 5U4 rectifier pushed the wattage to a sweet 10 watts - just enough clean headroom to let your pedals breathe, yet still responsive enough to churn out that satisfying grind when you dig in. It's a masterclass in tube selection: every component chosen to balance clarity, punch, and that addictive feel of a power tube working hard without working too hard. The PHD keeps things beautifully simple up front with a single tone control borrowed from vintage Harvard wisdom, paired with a master volume that lets you dial in killer overdrive at bedroom levels or unleash full clean headroom. Inside the lightweight poplar cabinet sits a WGS G10 C/S speaker that punches way above its weight - at just 29 pounds, you're getting a portable powerhouse without the cramped, boxy vibe smaller combos usually suffer from. Prefer to go modular? Grab the head version and stack it with a 2×12 or 4×12 cab. Either way, you're pushing two big octal tubes to their limit with a sonic presence that'll fill the room and surprise everyone
