The I-30 LC is the model we always wanted Collings to make. Anyone who knows us knows how much we love the ES-330 - a thinline with no center block responds a lot like an acoustic instrument in your hands, and that is where the 330’s musicality comes from. Its Epiphone sibling, the Casino, came out of the same Kalamazoo factory and ended up in the hands of three of the four Beatles, which says something about how far this design can stretch. Collings took that idea and built it their way. The body is fully hollow maple laminate with parallel trestle braces that tie the neck block to the tail block, so the guitar stays light and resonant while keeping its focus when you turn up. It balances easily on a strap, and it sounds good enough unplugged that you will find yourself playing it on the couch a bunch. This one has Collings’ optional ’60s neck profile, a slimmer carve in the spirit of early-’60s Gibsons. It measures about .83" at the first fret and .92" at the 12th, against .86" and .98" for the standard Collings C. The bigger difference is in the taper. The ’60s neck stays more even from the nut to the body, so it feels consistent as you move up. If you prefer a slimmer neck, or have found the standard carve a little full in the upper positions, this is the one to try. Plugged in, the range is wide. For jazz, go to the neck pickup and roll the tone back a touch. For P-90 snarl and bite, flip to the bridge and turn up your amp. Everything between those two is easy to find.
