Seller's description

Item is in very good playing and cosmetic condition with a couple minor scratches on the back. Comes with original hard shell case. This Vintage late 72' Red Label, Yamaha FG-180 has been professionally set up and tested. As is. $1000.00 OBO.The Yamaha FG-180 is a legendary, vintage dreadnought acoustic guitar first introduced in Japan in 1966. Developed by legendary developer Hideo Ueda, it was Yamaha's very first folk guitar. Often affectionately called the "poor man's Martin," it earned a massive reputation among singer-songwriters for offering exceptional, rich tone and extreme structural durability at an affordable price. The Famous "Red Label" The guitar is most famous for its vintage "Red Label" era (roughly 1968 to 1972), where a vibrant red label was affixed inside the sound hole indicating it was built at Yamaha's Nippon Gakki factory in Japan. It features a select spruce top, mahogany back and sides, a mahogany neck, and a rosewood fingerboard. Key CharacteristicsUnintentional Compression: Unlike modern cheap plywood, Yamaha engineered a unique three-ply cross-grained laminate process featuring layered, genuine saw-cut tone woods. Originally designed to survive climate shifts on cargo ships, it created a highly rigid top that acts almost like a built-in sound compressor.Huge Projection: Its jumbo dreadnought body provides incredible low-end response and excellent mid-range punch, making it perfect for driving rhythm guitar work and accompanying vocalists. The "Elliot Smith" Sound: Tuning an FG-180 down a full step (to D-standard) slacks the string tension, unlocking a uniquely dry, woody low-end decay popularized on iconic indie-folk records. Vintage Caveat: Because these guitars are over 50 years old, they are prone to high action and warped necks. A neck reset can be expensive—sometimes exceeding the guitar's value—so many owners look for ones that have already had a setup, fret-leveling, or neck repair.
