From the listing
A 1999 Historic Collection 1959 Les Paul Standard Reissue / Plain Top has arrived! This guitar features the original nut and frets and has very few scratches. This guitar has the understated elegance characteristic of the Plain Top model. Unlike the flashiness of so-called flame maple, this Plain Maple Top naturally reveals the wood’s inherent texture and grain pattern, focusing on the beauty of the material and the charm of aging rather than visual flashiness. Unlike the uniformly coated finish of current models, the nitrocellulose lacquer finish on this guitar has aged naturally, exhibiting slight unevenness and fading. As you can see in the photos, the cherry tones have faded somewhat, creating a vintage-like appearance where yellow and amber hues blend together. This “color developed over time” is one of the major charms of instruments from this era. Although the neck shape is the 1959 Rounded, there are slight individual variations characteristic of this era, and the fact that you can sense the “traces of handcrafting”—unlike the uniformly designed current models—is another appealing feature. High-quality rosewood is used for the fingerboard, giving it a depth of color and texture that is hard to find today. In terms of sound, it is equipped with a Gibson ’57 Classic Humbucker, producing a warm, full-bodied tone inspired by vintage PAFs. Furthermore, the combination of the ABR-1 bridge and a non-aluminum stopbar delivers a slightly denser midrange and moderate compression—distinct from the lightweight aluminum tailpieces found on current models—which is a characteristic unique to this era. Unlike current Historic models, this guitar embodies the material quality, finish texture, and expressive character derived from individual variations that are unique to the transitional period. For those who value the “breath” of an instrument and the character developed over time more than the precision of a mass-produced item, this is a truly captivating piece. * As
