The Epiphone Les Paul Special VE is a good choice if you want a Les Paul-style electric guitar without the weight or price of a carved-top Les Paul. The dual humbuckers give it a thicker, warmer sound than many single-coil starter guitars, making it well suited to overdrive, power chords, lead playing and classic rock tones. The control layout is simple and easy to understand, with one volume, one tone and a 3-way pickup selector. That makes it ideal for beginners, but still useful as a grab-and-go guitar for more experienced players. This pre-owned example has a striking worn cherry finish and would make a solid first electric guitar, spare gigging guitar or affordable addition to a collection.
