The Ibanez TS808 Tube Screamer Overdrive Pro was first introduced in 1979 and developed by Maxon for Ibanez, and its circuit is still regarded as the reference for the classic Tube Screamer sound. Since 2004 Ibanez has offered the TS808 as a reissue that faithfully follows the original design, including the JRC4558D op-amp at the heart of the circuit. The result is a warm, amp-like overdrive with a characteristic boost of the upper midrange and a controlled roll-off of the low end, which keeps the guitar present in a live mix. The three controls, Overdrive, Tone and Level, allow everything from a clean volume boost to a saturated, singing lead tone, and the pedal excels at driving the input stage of a tube amplifier into richer distortion. This has made the TS808 a standard choice for blues and rock players and one of the most frequently copied and modified overdrive designs in history. This example has been modified with a larger soft-touch footswitch, which makes switching the effect on and off noticeably clearer and more comfortable. Because of the larger switch, there is no longer room for a battery inside the housing, so the pedal is powered exclusively through an external power supply. In practice this is a minor consideration, as the TS808 is almost always used with a power adapter on a pedalboard anyway.
