This is a one-off Fender/Danocaster Jazz Bass. I purchased it in 2018 from Dan Strain, of Danocaster Guitars. This is not an official Danocaster. It is a Fender Jazz Bass ‘62 vintage reissue model JBD-62, made at the Fujigen factory during the golden age of Fender Japan production. It was given a makeover by Dan Strain as an early project. It was his personal bass before "Danocaster" took off. I got lucky and bought it when he was clearing his workshop. Danocaster is known for extremely playable guitars that feel vintage. This bass captures some of Danocaster's early magic, at a more accessible price point. Dan Strain did fretwork, added a carved bone nut, installed Lindy Fralin pickups and a new bridge-ground. The neck profile feels like a worn-in old friend. I believe it is some combination of Dan's mystery neck finishing technique and natural playwear. Just a phenomenal neck that instantly feels like home. It is smooth and free of any dings or surface damage. The only unfortunate side effect of the neck treatment is that the serial number has been lost from its position above the heel. This prevents the guitar from being accurately dated, however it bears the markings of a late 80's or early 90's Fujigen build (body stamp, tuners, neck pocket fit and era-correct neck plate). Regardless, while the JBD-62 platform was a premium starting point, this bass is special because of the Danocaster-like fit and finish, not the factory one. The body "relic'ing" is natural play-wear. The original gloss black finish shows nicks, scuffs, and shallow dings on the body as a whole. Nothing drastic, but it's clearly been played. There is a small paint chip by the neck-pocket (G-side) that has been poorly touched-up. The pickguard has pick-swirls and a small chip where some of the tortoise has flaked off the tip of the lower horn.Fretboard: Rosewood slab, 7 ¼” vintage-spec radiusNeck: Maple – Oval Type CFrets: Minimal wear, good height and crownTuners: Clover buttons, long stemsNu
