2020 Gibson Custom Shop 1954 Les Paul Custom Reissue, finished in Black and presented in exceptionally clean condition with its original case, tags and certificate. The ’54 Custom represents the Les Paul “Black Beauty” in its earliest form. Rather than the maple-capped construction of a Standard, these early Customs used a solid mahogany body paired with a mahogany neck, long tenon and ebony fingerboard. Gibson’s reissue follows that formula closely, with no weight relief, multi-ply binding, pearl block inlays and the full gold hardware treatment. The neck is a proper ’50s-style carve with plenty in the hand, measuring 42.5mm at the nut, 23mm deep at the 1st fret and 25.9mm at the 12th. Combined with the 24.75” scale and 12” fingerboard radius, it has that substantial early Les Paul feel that is great to play. One of the defining features of the ’54 Custom is the pickup combination. Instead of humbuckers, you get a Custom Staple/Alnico pickup in the neck and a Soapbar P-90 at the bridge; a brilliant pairing that gives the guitar a very different character to later Les Paul Customs. This example measures 8.54k at the neck and 7.65k at the bridge. The Staple has plenty of clarity and definition, while the bridge P-90 brings the bite, attack and midrange punch. Hardware is suitably period-inspired, with an ABR-1 Tune-O-Matic bridge, stopbar tailpiece, Kluson Waffleback tuners with single ring tulip tips, black bonnet knobs and gold plating throughout. Internally, Gibson specified CTS 500k pots and paper-in-oil capacitors. This one has been very well looked after and remains super clean throughout. The Black finish, ebony board and gold hardware make for the classic “tuxedo” Les Paul look. A great example of one of Gibson’s most distinctive ’50s designs, complete with its original Custom Shop hard case, tags and certificate.
