Apparently Fender looked at a Telecaster and said, “This thing has entirely too much wood in it.” So they hollowed it out, cut an F-hole in the top, sprayed it Firemist Gold, beat it up just enough to eliminate the anxiety of the first ding, and somehow ended up with a 6.1-pound Telecaster that looks like it has already played better gigs than most of us ever will. This 2020 Fender Custom Shop Limited Edition ’68 Telecaster Thinline is finished in Aged Firemist Gold Metallic with a Journeyman Relic treatment and a killer white pearloid pickguard. It has all the classic Tele ingredients—ashtray bridge, brass saddles, maple neck, two single coils and enough twang to make neighboring guitars nervous—but with the added resonance and ridiculously comfortable weight of the Thinline body. And yes, Fender relic’d the back of the neck, too. Apparently simulated decades of questionable career choices were part of the package.
