Jaguar’s XK50 celebrations marked 50 years since the arrival of the XK120 and XK engine in 1948. A number of special commemorative items were produced around the anniversary, one being a limited run of 25 Fender Stratocasters; certainly one of the more unusual results of the programme, yet undoubtedly one of the coolest! This example is number 23 of 25. Rather than simply applying a Jaguar badge to a standard Strat, the spec was designed to reference the cars themselves, with British Racing Green finish, gold hardware and a number of bespoke details taken directly from Jaguar’s designs. The most obvious of these is the walnut scratchplate, chosen to echo the timber dashboards found in classic Jaguars. The theme continues onto the neck with a walnut fingerboard and distinctive gold Jaguar inlays and logo on the 12th fret. Against the British Racing Green body and gold hardware it makes for a very classy combination and one that works surprisingly well on this model! These guitars were also supplied with some suitably Jaguar-like accessories, including a buttery soft, white Connolly leather gig bag and an outer flight case, all of which are included with this example. Having seen little use over the years this one is in excellent condition. The body and neck finish is stunning, the only condition point to note is some slight tarnishing of the gold plating on the knobs, jack and neck plate. All in all, a fascinating piece of late-’90s Fender Custom Shop history and an incredibly scarce collaboration between two of the most recognisable names in their respective industries. With only 25 made, the Jaguar XK50 is the sort of Fender that even seasoned collectors may never have encountered in person.
