Here's an interesting one for the Gibson nuts. A 1972 J-100, dating to the first year of the model's reintroduction after its original wartime production run. Essentially a dressed-down version of the flagship J-200, both the '40s and '70s examples featured spruce tops, mahogany back and sides, and considerably more restrained ornamentation. These early '70s reissues are fantastically rare, with just 140 shipped in 1972 and a total production of around 300 instruments through to 1975. Buggered if I know why they made so few, because this one sounds considerably better than your typical early '70s Gibson acoustic. Big, bold and surprisingly responsive, with a lovely mahogany warmth and plenty of bottom end. Now, this is very much a player-grade instrument, and quite firmly in that camp. Multiple repaired top cracks, some significant bellying of the soundboard, and a rather unsightly headstock repair. The bridge has been heavily shaved, leaving very little saddle height to work with, although the action is currently sitting at a reasonably comfortable 3.25mm on the bass side and 2.75mm on the treble. The bridge could benefit from some ramping to improve the break angle over the saddle. It's also been fitted with a set of chrome Grover tuners. So, cosmetically and structurally, there's quite a bit going on here. But for all its shortcomings, it's a genuinely lovely sounding old Gibson, and a particularly uncommon one at that. Sold as is and priced accordingly. Includes the original Gibson jumbo hardcase, in fairly rough condition and held together in places with gaffer tape. Still, it's the original! Serial #615056.
